This blog post could be called 30 of the best London Bakeries given the plethora of
choice and quality across the capital, and when it come to do a product development
research day on bakery how do you pick out the ‘go to’ places…so I’ve just written
about delicious products, my favourites that I would make the journey for again, I
think this is when you know you’ve got a benchmark!
Quiche aux fromages – Arome Bakery
Ok quiche is not sexy, but this quiche was sooo good, the technical execution of this
was incredible – thin, even, perfectly baked buttery pastry, deep just set creamy
eggy filling and so much rich flavour from the beautiful blend of gorgonzola,
mozzarella and cheddar. Finished with fresh chives for a little oniony hit to balance
out the cheese and add freshness. When it’s made this well it seems so simple but if
you know you know.. my benchmark every time.
Crème Brullee Doughnuts – Bread Ahead
Doughnut lovers will come at me... It’s not a doughnut, it’s too messy, where’s the
jam…I don’t even care it’s all the things I want from a doughnut! Warm, fluffy, rich
dough perfectly fried and filled with a perfectly set baked brulee so there’s pretty
much a 50/50 ratio of filling to doughnut and then a crispy layer of caramelised sugar
on top – this doughnut delivers – great texture, beautiful blends of caramelised
flavour and it looks the part as well. Style and substance – Bread Ahead have nailed
it!
Coconut Macaroon/Little cake – Fortitude Bakehouse
I get it – bakery nerds talk about the beignets, the cinnamon buns, there’s so much
good stuff at Fortitude however for me I make a beeline for the unassuming coconut
macaroons – sometimes called ‘little cakes’ at Fortitude, and not to be confused with
macarons. These are crisp on the outside, moist in the middle with a delicious sweet
yielding texture from great quality desiccated coconut usually mixed with egg whites,
sugar, vanilla and a little pinch of salt – again a simple thing made beautifully, they
also happen to be gluten free if that’s your thing. Worth following your map app to
find this gem!
