3 Of The Best Street Eats in South Wales

Life working in product development inevitably means plenty of travel to places not normally on the weekend break list. This makes eating well quite tricky and often a quick bite at a rail station or pulling over to eat a sandwich in the car is the best you can do. I recently travelled to a few manufacturing sites across South Wales so made it my task to seek out the best street eats the area had to offer.

Babhaus Mex – Goodsheds Barry -TOP PICK

The all-female team at Babhaus led by Leyli and Bec have been knocking out the most amazing Mexican/BBQ food since 2018 and now have 3 sites across South Wales. The food is a contemporary mix of Mexican flavours expertly blended with big BBQ technique to deliver the most outstanding street food I’ve eaten in a long time. I went for their signature dish which was the Beef Birria Tacos. Corn tortillas dipped in fat rendered from the delicious slow cooked beef, topped with queso then grilled to create a gooey and lightly crisp taco which was then piled with beef. Each plate comes with a pot of dipping consommé, strained cooking juices from the beef and their Haus hot sauce. To balance the big flavours a refreshing slaw of onion and cabbage cuts through the richness and makes eat bite sing. What a find!! Worth the 4-hour car journey alone.

Burger Boyz – Newport Market

The team at Burger Boyz have been ‘smashing’ out pretty epic burgers using great quality beef from ex dairy cattle, paired with big flavour sauces since 2021. They have become a bit of a viral hit lately so wanted to check out what all the fuss was about. I had the Chuck Norris, smash patty, American cheese, caramelised onions, crispy bacon and big up sauce. Overall, it was a delicious burger, well caramelised beef layered with sweet and savoury fillings it was a rich eat and certainly made you feel satisfied. Did it live up to the hype, absolutely, next time ill be ordering the spicy El Chapo.

Bao Selecta – Flos Caerphilly

It’s not too often that the vegan option is my favourite but the team at Bao Selecta did what no one has done before and made me enjoy Seitan. Essentially flavoured, steamed and fried wheat gluten doesn’t normally do it for me but here they use it to make a Szechuan style chilli ‘beef’ which was everything you want it to be, slightly hot and fragrant, a little chewy and that right balance of sweetness and acidity. It was really good. Served in a soft pillowy bun with pickled onion and cucumber and sprinkle of sesame it was surprising, delicious and definitely worth the stop.
